Gorges State Park October 2026 Events Near Lake Toxaway

In October 2026, the busiest public calendar near Lake Toxaway belongs to Gorges State Park. That calendar is also more compact than its listing suggests. Seven ranger and volunteer programs run between October 6 and November 3. Four of them meet at White Pines Picnic Shelter, three last half an hour, and all but one end by 11 a.m.

That timing matters because the lake's own season is closing. Lake Toxaway Country Club lists its Lake Club and Grille as closing for the season on September 28. Its full dining schedule is labeled May through October, and in November lunch drops to Friday through Sunday. Meanwhile the state park up the road is running its fullest stretch of programs.

A Calendar Built for Weekday Mornings

These programs are short, and most of them happen on weekdays. Here is the full run, in order:

  1. Native Plant Gardens Volunteer Day. First Tuesdays, 9 to 11 a.m., at the Grassy Ridge Visitor Center. The October session is today, October 6, and the next one is Tuesday, November 3. Volunteers tend the native landscape garden, which teaches visitors about native plants and pollinators. Bring work gloves, water, a hat and clothes for the weather. Volunteers get a Friends of Gorges T-shirt.
  2. All About Arachnids. Wednesday, October 7, 9 to 10 a.m., at White Pines Picnic Shelter. It's a moderate hike on the Picnic Connector Trail looking for the park's spiders. Anyone who logs 10 iNaturalist entries can earn a NC Spider Week patch.
  3. Our Native Bamboo: Rivercane. Monday, October 12, 10 to 11 a.m., in the Visitor Center Auditorium. This Indigenous Peoples' Day talk covers rivercane's place in the region, its role in the ecosystem and in Indigenous lifeways, and current restoration work.
  4. Black Bear Basics. Tuesday, October 13, 10 to 10:30 a.m., at White Pines Picnic Shelter. It covers what to do when you see a bear and how people can protect bears, with bear skins and skulls to handle.
  5. 10 Hiking Essentials. Wednesday, October 21, 10 to 10:30 a.m., at White Pines Picnic Shelter. A ranger talks through hiking safety and preparation, including what to carry.
  6. Fall Colors Hike. Sunday, October 25, 10 to 10:30 a.m., at White Pines Picnic Shelter. This moderate 30-minute walk explains why leaves change color and how the forest shifts with the season.
  7. Haunted History Hike. Friday, October 30, 7 to 8 p.m., meeting at the Rainbow Falls Trailhead. Over a moderate hour, it covers local legends, ghost stories and the people who lived on this land before it became a park. There's candy, and costumes are encouraged.

Five of these fall on weekdays. One is on a Sunday, and the only evening program is the Friday before Halloween. Most of the White Pines sessions end by 10:30 a.m., so you can go to one and still have most of the day left.

None of the event pages list a cost or say whether you need to register. The volunteer day has a sign-up link, but the page doesn't say signing up is required. If you're bringing a group, call the visitor center first.

Why White Pines Carries Most of the Load

White Pines hosts the arachnid walk, the bear talk, the hiking-essentials talk and the fall colors walk. All four last an hour or less, and the two that are walks are rated moderate. The park covers more than 8,000 acres of temperate rainforest on the Blue Ridge Escarpment. It has 26 waterfalls, borders the northern end of Lake Jocassee and includes part of the 70-mile Foothills Trail. The October programs cover a small corner of all that.

The programs held elsewhere stay on the Grassy Ridge side of the park too. The rivercane talk is in the Visitor Center Auditorium, and the volunteer garden mornings meet at the visitor center. The Haunted History Hike starts at the Rainbow Falls Trailhead after dark. Grassy Ridge Access is at 976 Grassy Ridge Road in Sapphire.

The Longer Trail That Starts at the Same Trailhead

The Haunted History Hike starts where one of the park's best-known day hikes begins. The U.S. Forest Service lists Rainbow Falls Trail as 1.5 miles one way and rates it strenuous. The trailhead and roughly the first three-quarters of a mile are on Gorges State Park land, and the falls themselves are on Forest Service land. That page was last updated January 21, 2026. It lists the trail for year-round use but doesn't say whether it is currently open.

If you already know the route, the October 30 hike gives you a short, guided hour at the same trailhead after dark. If you plan to hike to the falls by daylight before then, give yourself time to get back to the car before the gate closes.

Gate Hours Shrink From Here

Daylight shortens quickly after October, and the park's posted hours shorten with it:

  • October: 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
  • November: 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • December through February: 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Visitor center: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, closed Christmas Day

October is the only month in that list with a 9 p.m. close. That gives the Haunted History Hike, which ends at 8 p.m., an hour of room. The November volunteer morning on the 3rd falls under the 8 p.m. schedule. From December through February, the gate closes at 7 p.m.

Where Things Stand After Helene

Hurricane Helene hit in late September 2024, and the park reopened in stages. NC State Parks said Grassy Ridge would reopen November 1, 2024, including the visitor center, the trails to Rainbow and Upper Bearwallow Falls, and front-country camping. A November 14, 2024 release said Frozen Creek Access and all backcountry campsites would reopen November 15. Lime Kilns and Foothills trails were to stay closed, and "all other facilities are currently open."

Today the park's homepage shows a single "Open" label for hiking trails and another for bike and bridle trails. The trail directory still lists Auger Hole and Canebrake, but it gives trail details, not their open or closed status. The October programs all use the Grassy Ridge side. If you're planning something longer from Frozen Creek, check with the park before you go.

Before and After a Morning Program

Most sessions start at 9 or 10 a.m., so you can stop for coffee on the way. Sweetwater Perk & Creamery, at 15886 Rosman Highway, serves coffee and ice cream and has a gift shop. The Laurel described it this spring as open "pretty much all year," with hours of 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. On Sundays it opens at 11, an hour after the 10 a.m. Fall Colors Hike starts, so coffee that morning comes after the walk.

For something later in the day, the Greystone Inn's kitchen has a new executive chef. The Laurel's spring profile says Donnie Simmons has led it since February and has built a Southern-focused menu plus a new bar-only menu. The Inn's website doesn't post meal hours or seasonal dates, so call 828-966-4700 before you go.

The next fixed date after October is the November 3 garden morning at the Grassy Ridge Visitor Center, 9 to 11 a.m. Bring gloves and water.
